100 italian journalist make an appeal at Minister Tajani
Rome, October 18, 2025
Appeal to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Hon. Antonio Tajani for the presence in Rome of the two journalists from Gaza Fatena Mohanna and Alhassan Selmi, Golden Doves for Peace
Dear Minister,
In the tragedy of the Gaza war, a special place is occupied by the killings of journalists. In less than two years of war the number of journalists killed by Israeli weapons, the vast majority of whom are Arabs and particularly Palestinians, amounts to dozens and dozens of victims. This phenomenon — absolutely staggering when compared to the number of journalists killed in the First and Second World Wars — leads us to think that it is the result of an intentional action. Thus, today in Palestine the PRESS vest has become an involuntary yet effective mark for targeting. Since this is coupled with the ban imposed on international correspondents from entering Gaza to do their job, it becomes evident that the objective is to obstruct the right of the global public opinion to read, listen to, and see reports of what has happened and is happening in the Strip over these two years.
Despite the bans and the deadly risk of exposing themselves to the fire of the occupiers, to this day a handful of courageous journalists document the events of the war with words and videos.
Among them, three Palestinian reporters — two young women and one man — have helped bring the reality of Gaza to the Italian public. They are Aya Ashour (24 years old), correspondent for Il Fatto Quotidiano, and Fatena Mohanna (25 years old) and Alhassan Selmi (32 years old), authors of reports broadcast by Presa Diretta (Rai3). The Golden Doves for Peace journalism award, founded by Archivio Disarmo in 1986, in its previous 40 editions has been awarded to masters of the press, radio, and television such as (to name only the first fifteen years) Rodolfo Brancoli, Italo Moretti, Alberto Cavallari, Dino Frescobaldi, Igor Man, Tahar Ben Jalloun, Demetrio Volcic, Paolo Rumiz, Bernardo Valli, Ennio Remondino, Ignacio Ramonet, Andrea Purgatori, and many others.
In the 2025 edition, only Aya Ashour is currently present in Italy, thanks to a scholarship from the University for Foreigners of Siena. Instead, Fatena Mohanna and Alhassan Selmi are blocked in the Gaza Strip devastated by the war.
We appeal to you, Mr. Minister, so that these two journalists may be allowed to reach Italy and receive the Golden Dove for Peace on the upcoming October 18 in Rome. Few deserve this prestigious recognition as much as they do, for the expertise, consistency, courage, and also the extraordinary balance with which they have exercised one of the greatest rights of peace and democracy: the right to information.
