The 40th edition of the Golden Dove for Peace Prize, organized by Archivio Disarmo with the support of Legacoop will take place on 12 October, in the Hall of the Protomoteca in Campidoglio kindly granted by Roma Capitale.
The Golden Dove for peace, designed by "sculptor of the Popes" Pericle Fazzini, is awarded every year to journalists and an international personality who are committed to peace. The jury is composed of Fabrizio Battistelli, president of Disarmo Archive, Dora Iacobelli, Riccardo Iacona, Dacia Maraini, Andrea Riccardi and Tana de Zulueta.
Four journalists will be awarded in Rome.
Veronica Fernandes, TV journalist for the Foreign news of Rainews24 says: "There are two things that are important in war journalism: the first is to realize that photographing horror is somewhat simple. Instead we must always weave the story of the moment into context and history, showing the people we interview as whole people, not only in the role they have at that time, for example victim or executioner. The second is that it is not enough to be there, but we need to constantly question what we see and the effect of asking a person to share with us his hell on him when we are gone."
Matteo Pucciarelli, journalist of the political desk of la Repubblica declares "Just as a new generation of historians is beginning to recount events not only as a succession of wars, as if war was inherent in human nature and motor of History, journalism also needs to look at where we learn non-violent theories and practices, based on the deconstruction of the image of the enemy, internationalism, social and environmental justice"
Safwat Al Kahlout, Al Jazeera correspondent in Gaza, for six months from 7 October 2023, has narrated the last chapter of the Israeli-Palestinian war and its devastation. Safwat recalls: "From the very first moments of the Israeli attack I knew that this event would change the fate of Gaza and all of us. That’s why I worked to tell the world the truth of the conflict. Journalism in Gaza has paid a huge toll in terms of human lives, journalists and workers who have fallen victims of the war. The work of the journalist is precious and for this reason I am honoured to receive this prize which I dedicate to all colleagues who have lost their lives under the bombing".
Meron Rapoport, a journalist born and raised in Israel, is the columnist for +972 Magazine, an Israeli-Palestinian online magazine, and director of the Hebrew-language sister site, Local Call. Rapoport says: “In these dark times in Israel, Palestine and the whole region, and when freedom of the press is threatened and journalists are killed while preforming their duty, it is a great honor for me to receive the Golden Dove prize from Archivio Disarmo. Journalism has always been for me more than a just job, it was a tool to promote justice, give voice to the unheard and fight falsification. This reward will encourage me to continue this mission”.
A network of 250 associations around the world made up of citizens, researchers and civil society representatives has been working to raise public opinion and politicians' awareness about the issue of Artificial Intelligence applied to weapons.
As in 2017, when the International Golden Dove was awarded to the Campaign for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), this 40th edition also rewards an international Campaign, the Stop Killer Robots Campaign. Its aim is to prevent the risk that, under the pretext of defence, artificial intelligence will be removed from human control. Peter Asaro, Professor of Philosophy of Science and Technology at the New York School of Media Studies and vice president of the campaign, will receive the prize.
Peter Asaro states: "The Stop Killer Robots Campaign is honored to receive the Golden Dove for Peace award. Artificial Intelligence (AI) will play a key role in the way we live as individuals, as societies and as a global community, so it is essential to establish an international law to regulate the autonomy applied to weapons systems. The dehumanization, targeting and killing of people in military contexts by AI is unacceptable, as is its use in police duties, border control and society at large. Decisions about life or death cannot be delegated to machines".
Regarding the 79th UN General Assembly taking place in New York these days, Asaro stresses the opportunity that is offered to states "to act urgently and show continued political leadership on the issue of autonomous weapons".
